Women's Mental Health

Reproductive Psychiatry -

psychiatric health from preconception, through pregnancy, postpartum, parenting, and menopause.

Postpartum depression is nearly 2X more common than gestational diabetes or hypertension in pregnancy making it the most common complication of pregnancy.

More than 1 in 7 women will experience a mood or anxiety disorder around pregnancy and often they will be unrecognized and usually undertreated.

The Good News

Starting July 1, 2019, new CA laws (AB-2193) take effect requiring health care practitioners who provide prenatal or postpartum care to offer screening or confirm that screening has taken place, at least once during pregnancy or the postpartum period.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has similar recommendations and even The American Academy of Pediatrics has guidelines recommending screening of new moms for postpartum depression at 1,2,4,& 6 month baby wellness checks.
